The new Geography of Hell LP, Baghdad 1991, plunges into the first Gulf War, fueled by televangelists’ sermons while Tomahawk cruise missiles streaked across the sky and GBU-12 laser bombs rained down on burning oil fields. This sonic excavation is built from meticulous archival research: US trooper self-recorded videos, TV broadcasts, and 1991 televangelist preaches, all woven into mechanical, hypnotic structures that echo the weaponized return of Christ in the Middle East.
Haunting the entire record is the voice of Aïda from Verdi’s opera, now repurposed as a ghostly chorus against the priests of Pharaoh—those who posses the weapons, sanctity of slaughter.
The album’s crushing rhythms, synths, loops, feedback, and drones feed an inferno, where 130-foot flames claw at the sky: a divine judgment. The voices of the priests rise, clear and commanding, guiding soldiers through fire and desolation.
Baghdad 1991 LP is accompanied by Baghdad 2003 CD. An ambient evocation of the 2003 conflict — a darker soundscape, samples, synth exploration. A sonic investigation into the labyrinthine depths of the second war in Iraq, in search of wandering souls among the desert ruins of history.
Baghdad - where thousands dawn gas masks while the prayers of millions broadcast on cathode rays back home a self-proclaimed Destiny across these two companion albums. Welcome to your future.
